Basketry and Beyond was set up in 2002 by Geraldine Jones and Hilary Burns, enthusiastic willow installation artists and basketmakers, to demonstrate the relevance of the craft to our lives in an exciting and innovative way.
We are a not-for-profit organisation whose aims are to increase the awareness of basketry in all its forms through the presentation of high quality events, activities and courses. To extend the boundaries of basketry and construction using natural materials in a community, social, educational and economic context.
The organisation centres on the area of rural regeneration around Porthleven in Cornwall, in the southwest of England but its remit is wider with an intended global focus.
Basketry and Beyond was formed in 2002 following the Porthleven
Water Gala 2000. This was followed by the Basket
Fair 2003 which promoted the traditional basketry of rural and fishing industries in the western seaboard countries, and looked at the celtic links that run from Ireland through Cornwall and along the Spanish coastline.
Our forthcoming event: 'Bamboozle -Bridge the Gap 2007' will be held in June - a multi stranded festival event profiling the use of bamboo and small diameter wood in basketry and sustainable construction.
If you have an interest in any of these areas we welcome your participation.
